A slow computer is frustrating, and the easy assumption is that it's old and it's time to buy a new one. But most of the "slow" computers we look at in Orange don't need replacing at all. They need a cleanup, a bit of maintenance, or one specific upgrade that costs a fraction of a new machine.
Here's how to work out which camp yours is in before you spend a cent.
Why do computers get slower over time?
Computers rarely slow down because the hardware "wears out." They slow down because, over years of use, they accumulate too many programs running in the background, a full or failing hard drive, and a build-up of clutter that the machine has to wade through every time it starts. The hardware is usually fine; it's being asked to do too much at once.
Signs it just needs a cleanup
If any of these sound familiar, there's a good chance a tidy-up will fix it:
- It takes forever to start up but runs okay once it's going. That's usually too many programs launching at boot.
- Lots of programs open automatically when you turn it on, things you never asked for.
- The fan runs constantly and it feels hot, even when you're just browsing.
- Storage is nearly full. A drive with almost no free space slows a computer dramatically.
- It's been years since anything was cleaned up or updated.
Signs it might genuinely need replacing
Sometimes a machine really is at the end of the road. Lean towards replacement if:
- It's roughly 8+ years old and struggles even after a cleanup.
- It can't run current software or is stuck on an operating system that no longer gets security updates.
- It's already had a cleanup recently and slowed straight back down.
- Something physical is failing, so it crashes randomly, makes clicking noises, or won't reliably turn on.
If your computer still has an old-style spinning hard drive (an HDD), swapping it for an SSD is the single biggest speed upgrade you can make. It's inexpensive, takes about an hour, and can make a five-year-old laptop feel brand new. Most machines this improvement suits are nowhere near needing replacement.
Cleanup steps you can try yourself
You can do a lot of this without any technical know-how:
- Restart it. Properly: shut down and start up, not just close the lid. Many people go weeks without a real restart, and it clears a lot of temporary slowdown.
- Trim what starts automatically. On Windows, open Task Manager and look at the Startup tab; on a Mac, check Login Items in Settings. Disable anything you don't need launching at boot.
- Free up storage. Empty the recycle bin/trash, remove programs you no longer use, and move photos and videos to cloud storage or an external drive. Aim to keep at least 15 to 20% of the drive free.
- Install updates. Outdated systems are slower and less secure. Let pending updates finish, then restart.
What a professional cleanup adds
The DIY steps handle the obvious stuff. A proper service goes further: checking the health of the drive before it fails, clearing out software that's quietly using resources, confirming the machine isn't running hot because of dust, checking for anything malicious, and, crucially, telling you honestly whether an SSD upgrade would transform it or whether it's genuinely time to replace. That honest assessment is the part that saves you money.
The bottom line
Don't assume slow means dead. A machine that boots slowly, runs hot, or has a full or spinning drive can usually be revived for far less than a replacement. The only way to know for sure is a proper look. But going in, the odds are firmly on your side that it's fixable.
